Recommended Italian Literature

Here is a list of literature (catalogues and books) I think it would be  helpful for any Italy collector (of classics or of modern stamps).  [...] = descriptions, {...} = my
opinion about the particular book.

CATALOGUES:

A) Sassone "Catalogo completo dei francobolli d'Italia e dei Paesi Italiani", in two volumes  (1 and 2) , 1999, 58th edition, editor Sassone s.r.l. - Roma {email: sassone@pronet.it}. First volume: "Antichi Stati, Regno, R.S.I., Luogotenenza, Repubblica, Trieste; Emissioni Locali, Occupazioni Straniere; S.Marino, Vaticano,
S.M.O.M." .Second volume: "Terre Redente Annesse od Occupate; Uffici Postali all'Estero; Colonie e Possedimenti; Occupazioni Straniere delle Colonie;
Interi Postali".  Included a booklet: " Memorandum del Filatelista", (only with cat. values). [original cover price Lit. 65,000, for 1+2 + a handbook catalogue, soft
bound, 1500 pages, pictures in colours] {basilar catalogue, with a reasonable degree of specialization...not for the States though}

B) Sassone "Catalogo dei francobolli degli Antichi Stati Italiani, del Regno di Vittorio Emanuele II e del Regno d'Italia fino al 1900, in two volumes . 1999 , 58th edition, editor Sassone s.r.l. - Roma First volume: "i francobolli" ; Second volume: "Gli annullamenti"  ( 1st: "stamps" and 2nd: "obliterations"), [original cover price Lit 195,000 for the two volumes, 1046 pages, hard bound, full colours and something b&w ] {very good work, especially the cancels volume, but a little expensive}

C) Vaccari "catalogo di francobolli e storia postale, Antichi Stati Italiani, Governi Provvisori e Regno d'Italia, 1850 -1863" , {with many very interesting notes (the resumption of the Sassone catalogue of the Ancient Italian States) and catalogue prices = sell prices ( like Stanley Gibbons) }, 2000, eighth edition, editor Vaccari s.r.l. [original cover price Lit. 25,000, one volume, 190 pages, soft bound,  pictures/drawings in colours and b&w] {very good compromise quality - price, I suggest this catalogue to all the Italian States collectors, not only for the specialization level but also for the great reference for 'real' market values related to the quality of
the stamps}

D) "Catalogo Enciclopedico Italiano C.E.I. , gia d'Urso" (three volumes) 1979/1980 editor "Istituto Culturale Editoriale Filatelico s.r.l. (I.C.E.F.)" First volume: "Antichi Stati , Regno d'Italia, Occupazioni Straniere, Terre Redente, annesse od occupate, Uffici Italiani all'Estero, Colonie ".Second volume: "Occupazioni Italiane, Occupazioni Croate e Tedesche, Repubblica Sociale Italiana (R.S.I.), Emissioni Locali, Occupazioni Alleate e Luogotenenza, Repubblica Italiana, Territorio Libero di Trieste (T.L.T.)  Zona 'A' e Zona 'B' ". Third volume: "Repubblica di San Marino, Citta del Vaticano, Libia Regno e Repubblica, Somalia (A.F.I.S.) e Repubblica, Eritrea Libera, S.M.O.M. (Ordine di Malta)".  [original cover price Lit. 25,000 for the three volumes, 1535 pages, soft bound, pictures/drawings black and white] {beautiful work, very highly specialized with notes on reprints and forgeries}

E) Sassone "Catalogo delle Specializzazioni, Varieta e Storia Postale della Luogotenenza, Repubblica Italiana e Trieste A" (two volumes), 1999 14th edition by Gianni Carraro, Arturo Bodini, Roberto Brutto, Franco Grassi, Renato Mondolfo and Maurizio Raybaudi Massilia, editor Sassone s.r.l.First volume: "Luogotenenza, Repubblica Italiana e Trieste".Second volume: "Catalogo di Storia Postale" (A. Bodini, G. Carraro), contained a booklet: "Tariffe Postali dal 8-9-1943 al 30-6-1960". [original cover price Lit. 60,000 for the two volumes and the booklet about the postal tarifs, 943 pages, soft bound, pictures in black and white]
{the key catalogue, highly specialized, for any collector of modern italian stamps}

F) "Il Catalogo degli ANNULLI NUMERALI ITALIANI, 1866 - 1889, con valutazioni"  of Stefano Ricci and Paolo Vaccari, edition 1992,  editor Vaccari s.a.s.
[original cover price Lit. 50,000 one volume, 317 pages, soft bound, pictures in black and white] {interesting for numeral cancels collectors also because of its complete and, at the same time, introductory level}

MANUALS and BOOKS:

"Manuale e Catalogo dei francobolli di Sardegna" of Cesare Rattone, edition 1951, editor Amedeo Rolando, in Torino [original cover price Lit. 12,500, 412 pages, hard bound, pictures in black and white, 1 page in colour (the colour table of the five cents of the fourth issuance of Sardinia)] {Great reference to detect varieties, plates, etc.  and to approach the postal history of the kingdom of Sardinia}

"Le Effigi della IV emissione di Sardegna, 1855 -1863, Studio e Classificazione" of Francesco Maria Amato, 1994 editor Vaccari s.a.s.[original cover price Lit. 48,000, 128 pages, hard bound pictures / drawings in black and white] {very nice 'booklet' also a valid instrument to detect forged embossings and varieties of these}

"Regno di Sardegna - Regno d'Italia, 1855 - 1863, TAVOLE DEI COLORI, TABLES DES COLEURS, COLOUR PLATES, FARBTAFELN" of Paolo Vaccari, 1997 (printed in 500 copies numbered) editor Vaccari s.a.s.[original cover price Lit. 190,000, 116 pages, hard bound with 46 colour plates, written in four languages: Italian, French, English and German] {very good book, but a bit expensive}

"I Francobolli del Regno di Napoli, e i due Provvisori da Mezzo Tornese del 1860" of Emilio Diena, original edition of 1932, reprint of 1992, editor Vaccari s.a.s.
[cover price Lit. 38,000, 273 pages, soft bound with black and white pictures and drawings. It also contains one complete plate reconstruction of the 1/2 Tornese "Crocetta" with its 'one hundred' varieties] {fantastic book in every respect  for all the collectors / students of the stamps and postal history of the kingdom of Naples with copies of official documents, cancels, postal forgeries, etc....}

"Storia dei Francobolli di Sicilia" of Emilio Diena, italian edition of Roma 1989 (the first edition was in English "History of the stamps of Sicily", printed in London in 1904 by Stanley Gibbons Philatelic Hanbooks, translated by E.B. Evans), editor "Amministrazione delle Poste e Telecomunicazioni" under the cover title "Emilio Diena, una vita per la filatelia" (a preface to the work of E. Diena on the stamps of Sicily, containing some of his photo's and a very nice bibliography).[original cover price Lit. ?, actual price Lit. 30,000, 174 pages, soft bound with black and white pictures, plate reconstruction of the 1 Grano first plate, photo's of complete plates of: the 1 Grano third plate, 2 Grana first, second and third plate, 5 Grana first and second plate and many varieties and retouches of other stamps of the issuance for Sicily] {Great book, very helpful for determining the plate and the position in the plate of many values, with very detailed historical notes}

"Regno Lombardo Veneto, la prima e la seconda emissione" of E. Diena, L. Rivolta and A.E. Fiecchi, edition 1990, editor Vaccari s.a.s. [original cover price Lit.20,000, 64 pages, soft bound, pictures in black and white, many photo's and drawings, enlargements of important details and tables, etc...]

"I Francobolli del Ducato di Modena e delle Province Modenesi..." of Emilio Diena, reprint of 1984 from the original of 1894, editor Vaccari s.a.s. [cover price Lit. 40,000, 226 pages in colours (one table) and black and white, with b. & w. photo's of seven plates] {very nice introduction to the stamps of Duchy of Modena}

"Ducato di Parma, emissione 1857 -1859 e Note sui Francobolli del Governo  Provvisorio" of Emilio Diena, edition 1989, editor Vaccari s.a.s.[cover price Lit 25,000, 48 pages, soft bound pictures in black and white. One volume divided in two parts: Ist part consists of an article of the writer written originally in English, for the magazine the London Philatelist ( September 1930); IInd part, reprint from the original book published in 1913 about the stamps of the Provisional Government of Parma. Both the studies are completed of the tables in b. & w. of the entire sheets of these issuances]

DICTIONARY:

"Dictionary of English and Italian Philatelic Terms" Roy A. Dehn,  editor 1994 (bilingual), printed in Great Britain by ECN Ltd, Norwich, [original cover price Lit. 28,000, 64 pages, soft bound. Translations and explanations of untranslatable terms] {very useful}
