Measuring Grills

Measuring grills on the earlier U.S. issues of 1867-70 will be somewhat easier by this method:  Rub a lead pencil on a piece of paper, same as you would do to sharpen it.  Lay the grilled stamp face up over this lead marking and pressing lightly on the copy pass the grilled area of the stamp over the lead once or twice which will transfer some of the lead to the raised points of the grill.  You will find that the grill points may then be readily counted and measured and you won't harm the stamp if you don't over do it.
