$1 Presidential, U S I R Watermark
While the $1
Presidential stamp printed on
revenue paper, watermarked, "U S I R," has been given considerable
publicity
I have not as yet, seen any explanation as to what happened that
brought
about this variety. Without having made pertinent inquires, I
learn
from an authoritative source that the error was due to carelessness on
the part of the contractor who furnished the Bureau of Engraving and
Printing
with the paper.
Meanwhile, there
are
stories in circulation that, "four
employees of the Bureau have been fired," as a result of this usage of
revenue paper for the printing of postage stamps. In my
opinion,
this can be dismissed as wind-jamming and utterly without
foundation.
No one has been fired.
