Josiah K. Lilly, Jr.
Famous Philatelists Series
Josiah K. Lilly, Jr. (1893-1966) was born in Indianapolis, Ind., into the wealthy Lilly pharmaceutical family. In 1914 he joined the firm, but when the US entered World War I in 1917, he joined the Army Medical Service as a major.
He was a man of many hobbies, a bibliophile, numismatist, collector of model boats, and of military miniatures, as well as the compiler of one of the country's foremost stamp collections.
Few people knew of his interests, but after his death, the collection was offered by Robert A. Siegel in 10 separate auctions, and the full extent of his philatelic holdings became known.
The total realization of the 10 sales was more than $3 million.Posted September 28, 2000
