Subway Mail in New York

The New York post office has approached the New York City Transit Authority with a suggestion that means might be worked out whereby the subways could carry some of the mail.  New York and Brooklyn used to get faster service when the pneumatic tubes (privately owned) were in operation but the tubes contract was not renewed because some one of our more recent P.M.G.'s (I don't recall who) felt that trucks were cheaper and could get around the city fast enough.  It would seem the P.M.G. guessed wrong.
