Notes from the Past

Newfoundland -- New Provisional

Newfoundland issued a new provisional toward the end of March.  Stocks of the 30¢ carmine, Memorial University College design, were surcharged "TWO CENTS" in two lines in black.  J. K. Sissons writes that 500.000 were printed and the entire issue "cornered" almost immediately.  The speculators, he writes, are demanding several times face value for the stamps and openly boast of their achievement.  Since $10,000 would cover the face value of the issue, a corner would not have been difficult.
